Must-try delicacies Miaokou Pao-Pao Ice 廟口泡泡冰 Pao-Pao ice is different from milk- shaved ice in that pure frozen water is finely shaved, then desired condiments are added. It is then mixed to fully blend the added ingredients with the ice. The peanut-flavored Pao-Pao ice is especially recommended. Scallion Pancakes 蔥油餅 Scallion pancakes are found throughout the island, but the traditional Keelung variety is first pan fried then baked. The round-shaped pancakes are filled with lots of delicious and fresh scallions, with a crispy skin, and salty aromatic fillings. “Nutritious” Sandwich 營養三明治 During the ‘60s, a local street vendor selling sausages started selling sandwiches that looked like modern submarine sandwiches. After sprinkling on bread crumbs, it is deep fried and stuffed with tomatoes, cucumbers, braised eggs, and other fillings, and finally spread with mayonnaise. This delicious sandwich is now a very popular local snack. A Friendly Reminder: If you have tried everything at Keelung Night Market, try the Xiao 3rd Road, “Keelungers’ Kitchen” next! From pork liver sausages, noodles, shumai, to the half-steamed & half-roasted Shandong mantou, each street snack is tasty and unique. Tempura 天婦羅 Keelung has many dishes made with fish paste (fish surimi). Even though the menu might say “tempura,” it is anything but the traditional Japanese version. Delicious Taiwanese tempura from Keelung consists of a high ratio of fish surimi, so you can taste the rich flavor of the sea in every bite. Curry and Shacha Sauce Fried Noodles 咖哩沙茶炒麵 Shacha sauce was introduced by early immigrants from Teochew. In the Liulangtou area of Keelung, curry and Shacha sauce fried noodles have become a local specialty. Don’t miss out on it, as curry mixed with Shacha sauce is not something you can easily find in other places. Braised Pork Rice 滷肉飯 Braised pork rice is a must-try traditional dish. Every restaurant in Keelung offers its own version with different flavors and specialties.
